Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn Secondary School Refurbishment & Improvement Works
“Comprehensive refurbishment and improvement works at Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn Secondary School for Gwynedd Council, delivered within a live operational school environment. Enhancing accessibility, upgrading building fabric, and modernising key facilities across multiple buildings throughout the campus”
In 2025, Chesworth Construction Ltd successfully delivered a major £1,000,000 refurbishment and improvement programme at Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn Secondary School on behalf of Gwynedd Council. The project comprised extensive refurbishment, accessibility and building fabric improvement works across several areas of the school estate, carefully phased to ensure the school remained fully operational throughout the construction period.
The scope of works included the replacement of 46 sash and casement windows to Block A, including specialist curved-head feature windows to the main hall elevation, together with associated internal making good, decoration and finishing works. Extensive building fabric repairs were also completed, including repointing of decorative stone and brickwork, roof repairs, re-slating works, refurbishment of decorative lead entablature details, and the installation of new fascias, soffits, bargeboards, and rainwater goods to preserve and enhance the historic architectural character of the school buildings.
Accessibility improvements formed a key part of the project, including the construction of a new accessibility ramp to the main entrance, improving inclusive access for pupils, staff and visitors across the campus. Additional external refurbishment works were also completed to the Science Block, including roof repairs and replacement of precast concrete window cills.
Internally, the project included the complete refurbishment of pupil toilet facilities in Block D, carried out during the six-week summer holiday period. These works involved licensed asbestos removal, structural alterations, installation of 12 new cubicles and sanitaryware, impact-resistant finishes, and full mechanical and electrical service upgrades. The Community Block also underwent a comprehensive internal refurbishment, including M&E upgrades, fire door improvements, new aluminium access-controlled doors, and installation of a new Twinfix canopy system.
Delivering the works within a live school environment required detailed planning, strict segregation of construction activities, careful pedestrian management, and close coordination with school staff and stakeholders to maintain a safe and uninterrupted learning environment throughout the programme. Working at height, phased access arrangements, and maintaining operational continuity across the site were all successfully managed by our experienced site team and supply chain partners.
Through collaborative working, proactive management and a strong focus on quality and safety, Chesworth Construction Ltd successfully delivered significant improvements to the school’s facilities, accessibility, and long-term building performance, providing a modernised and enhanced educational environment for Ysgol Uwchradd Tywyn Secondary School and the wider community.
