In the summer of 2025, Chesworth Construction Ltd successfully delivered the comprehensive refurbishment of Cwrt Mawr (Block E) at Aberystwyth University, enhancing student living standards through a full upgrade of six flats comprising 58 bedrooms and associated communal areas. This £525,000 project has transformed the accommodation block into a modern, comfortable, and compliant residential facility, supporting the University’s commitment to providing a safe and welcoming student environment.
The scope of works included the full refurbishment of communal living spaces and shared bathrooms, installation of new Ellis kitchens with custom Aberystwyth-themed glass splashbacks, and complete redecoration across all flats and corridors. All flooring was renewed with a combination of Burmatex carpet tiles, Polyflor vinyl, and barrier matting, with stair nosings installed to enhance safety and compliance.
Fire safety and compliance were a significant focus, with the installation of new fire-rated flat entrance doors, formation of new flat entrances to improve compartmentation, and extensive fire-stopping works throughout. Security was further enhanced through the installation of Salto electronic locks in storage areas and upgraded bedrooms.
Mechanical and electrical upgrades formed a key part of the refurbishment, including the complete replacement of domestic hot and cold pipework with new copper systems, removal of redundant loft water tanks, and full testing and commissioning of all M&E systems. Electrical works also included new lighting, USB socket outlets, and other modern amenities.
Externally, the project comprised the replacement of fascias, soffits, and rainwater goods, the complete re-roofing of the pitched tiled roof with new felt and battens, and the refurbishment of flat roof areas including bay windows.
